Cover letter for the proposal
Since I have read articles based on space and place for almost two weeks, I think that I have a good idea of the difference between space and place. The significant denotation that a place contains has surprisingly impressed me and I begin to think the word place in a more critical way. For the assigned topic of “how are place and the self related”, I would like to narrow the connection into one specific perspective—language.
The main goal of my essay is to explore whether people who speak different languages think differently and what impacts languages have made to shape a place. According to four assigned readings and one research article found by myself, I would like to agree that places are created through local people’s engagement, a point needs emphasizing since so many people still have no idea about the close connection between a place and people who live in the place.
I think that the research article will provide a satisfied result for the topic I plan to explore, but I am afraid that only talking about languages will limit my thoughts and exclude other essential related factors. Since a place has shaped parts of characteristics for local people, language is not the only connection between a place and its residents. After talking to Doctor Lauren today, I am thinking about exploring the point of language in a deeper way. I might mix the influences of culture, which are presented by Tuan and Price in both articles, with the differences of languages to further support my essay. I still need to think more critically and provide more details to demonstrate the way in which languages connect a place and its inhabitants.
