Response to "space and place" &"place"
After reading Space and Place by Yi-Fu Tuan and Place by Patricia L. Price, I am impressed by the connection between space and place, as well as the meaning of them. Space and place were just two vocabularies to me and I never considered them in a more critical way before. While Tuan makes a difference between space and place in the first reading, he attaches more about humanitarian with the denotation of place. He thinks that since human beings have advantaged access to the states of contemplation and reflection, such approaches using rats to infer our behavior and worth lack of thorough concern. Price mainly focuses on the understanding of the word place though he also talks about the distinction between space and place. He holds place as a type of space that owns specific connotation through daily engagement.
In Space and Place, Tuan raises the question “given the human endowment, in what ways do people attach meaning to and organize space and place?” Also the nature of experience is worth discussing in shaping the space and place. Price dredges up more thoughtful questions about human existence on earth, for example, “what is the nature of human need for place?” and “how do we understand the balance between the permanence and the fragility of place, and of self?”
Summary for Space and Place
While the space refers to the feeling of openness and infinity, the place is more likely to have its own identity. Space is a more abstract item yet place contains with values. Some ethological studies show that animals also have a sense of territory and of place. Spaces are used to mark and to defend against intruders. Places are centers of significance where biological needs should be satisfied. Human beings respond in a more complicated way, which cannot be simply regarded to other animals. It is believed that culture influences both space and place in some extent, but only considering the factor culture will overlook other elements such as behavioral changes. Through the biological fact, the relations of space and place, and the range of experience and knowledge, we try to connect meanings with space and place as well as establish them.
Experience refers to the feeling to the external world. The word experience contains a meaning of passivity, seeming to suggest what a person has suffered. Since people are mature or immature depending on whether they have benefited from events, experience implies the ability to learn from what one has undergone. It is mixed with feeling and thought. Most people function with the five senses, which reinforce each other to provide the information about the world in which we live. We always embody our feeling in tangible material and can create abstract spaces in mind. The ability to recognize and to know a place depends on whether our experience has the weight of reality or not.

Space is abstract but place has value. People have a complex way to respond to place. Both culture and experience are crucial to make space and place meaningful.
Summary for Place
People are not simply social animals, but we are spatial ones. The place is central to accounts of how the world as we know, it is also central to historical accounts of how we came to know our world and place. According to Patricia L. Price, place is social product since “Space have areas and volumes. Places have space between them.” Place is a type of space which has accumulative meanings through everyday engagement.
Place is defined to be an energetic and resided community. It is constructed through human interaction over time with its locals as well as its essential elements. However, under late capitalism, place becomes more like space: abstract, smooth, masculine, and cerebral.
Massey raises the theory that people construct place through our own stories and place has no inherent coherence. This thought work against the romantic notions of timeless places and pre-given identities. Place emerges through participating by locals who live in. Place can be experienced through bodies because “walking has created paths, roads, trade routes.” Walking and biography are two different ways of being in a place.
There is an important relationship between self and place. Place is deeply felt in childhood. One of the most central emotional needs with respect to places is belonging. The removal from a place can incite negative emotions such as anxiety and terror because the removal violates our initial need for the place which we know a lot based on experience. Homes and houses provide refuge from the outside world when we are fragile. The unity and physical concrete of a place marks the boundaries.

Both themes of these two passages talk about the link between the space and the place and both writers signify the connotation of these two words. While Tuan talks more about the relationship between humanitarian and the significance of the place, Price mentions more about the construction of a place, which is generally worked by local people participating in the area.
In Space and Place, culture is not the only factor which can influence people on shaping the place. Tuan points out that people explore the world through experience. Experience, mostly directed to the external world, is consisted of feeling and thought. The process of seeing is closely related to the process of thinking. Many of us have gained a wider recognition of the world with our five senses.
In Place, place is considered to be a social product. It is closely connected with residents who live in the community and engage everyday. Place is deeply felt when we were in childhood. The feeling of belonging is the crucial emotion. Thus, removing from a place we used to live will provoke the feeling of fear and nervous.
Although these two passages have different emphasis, I think that their ideas are relevant to one another. Space is existed with boundaries while place is built wit values. Experience, which is valued by Tuan in the passage, is gained through daily engagement and interactions with others that Price holds up to.

Lahiri who was born in London but actually raised in Rhode Island considered Rhode Island as the place which shaped her identity and formed her values. She had the feeling of belonging to Rhode Island because she grew up there. She did not consider London—the place where she was born as home because she did not engage in that place. All her experiences and interactions with other people connected her with Rhode Island—the place which she called home and felt attached to it.
Lahiri’s story illustrates the key points in both Space and Place and Place. The permanence of a place which we called home is built through daily engagement and is consisted of values.
