Activity One
I never do such writing exercise before since I am used to writing after I have a general idea of the topic in my mind. Actually I would always stop when I am writing because I often look back at what I have already written. I always like to check whether my sentences written before have grammar mistakes or not or whether I can present my thoughts in a better way or not. This is the first time that I keep writing and do not worry about the fluency or the grammar problem. I am now in the library typing on my laptop. I am on the second floor and people sitting next to me have talked to each other for a long time. This is a new writing experience for me but now I have to stop because I really do not have anything to say.

Activity Two
The time I wrote particularly well was the time that I got my fourth response paper topic for my freshmen writing class at Emory. I still remember the topic of the reading I read for the response paper was The Irish Hunger. I wrote it particularly well because I connected it with the Great Chinese Famine, which I learned it during my history class in high school. Compared with the Great Irish Hunger, the Three Years of Great Chinese Famine was mainly attributed to economical and social mismanagement. Although poor climate, such as drought, was a contributory factor, the famine was largely a manmade catastrophe. Mao Zedong, the chairman of the Chinese communist party, introduced drastic changes in farming that prohibited farm ownership and led to peasant persecution. Farming was organized into communes and private plots were forbidden during this period. Although the exact extent of the famine is unknown due to the lack of records, the estimated total number of deaths was between 16 and 23 million, which marked the famine as one of the deadliest throughout history.
Activity Three
Activity Four
I always write in a quiet environment, such as in my dorm room. I prefer to write in a silent space and prefer to write alone. It is weird that I could not write in library even though I am on the quiet floor. I guess the reason is probably that I could not write well when some one is sitting near me. Also probably library is too cold for me to write. My dorm room is quite warm and I am comfortable writing there. I always write on my laptop but I used to write with a pen or a pencil when I was in high school.
Activity Five
My name is Anqi Cao, but you guys can go with Kara. I come from Shenzhen, a city near to Hong Kong, in the south area of China. It is a young city which has developed rapidly in recent 30 years. The weather of Shenzhen is quite warm and it never snow during the winter. I am not good at any sports except table tennis. I started to learn table tennis when I was around 7 years old. I used to play table tennis everyday when I was in primary school, but I seldom played table tennis when I entered my middle school since I got much more homework to do. During my free time, I enjoy shopping and sleeping. I do not cook often but I love having delicious food. My friends and I always go shopping together and eat a lot.
Activity Six
As I mentioned before, I am now in the library reading and writing. While I wrote the third one, people sit next to me started to talk to each other. Since I was on the noisy floor, people here did not tend to low down their voices when they talked. I usually could not write in such a noisy environment but probably because I do not need to worry about the grammar or the idea of this writing homework, they do not seem to influence me very much. I just felt like I was writing in my dorm room—the private place I prefer to write.
TS Exercise One
The vocabulary “place” tends to be similar with “space” according to a lot of people’s definitions. They see place just as a simple portion of space available for use. However, the word place is not less complicated than the word space. On the contrary, place is more likely to attach with values rather than the direct feeling of openness. For the truth is that an important relationship between self and place is existed during the childhood. Perhaps the reason is that people have a significant sense of belonging for the place they live in when they were young. In the readings Space and Place by Yi-Fu Tuan and Place by Patricia L. Price, both authors note the difference between the space and place and clearly show the connotation of the word place.
